Beyond Alpine, the route turns rural quickly. It follows the old east–west corridor through inland San Diego County and keeps gaining elevation early in the day. Around Descanso and Pine Valley, dry slopes, oaks, chaparral, scattered houses and wide valleys shape the ride. The road often stays close to the interstate corridor, but the smaller sections feel much quieter. After that, the landscape becomes harsher. Toward Boulevard, long straights, granite boulders, fences, ranchland and the first desert edges take over. The highest ground comes before Jacumba. From there, the route crosses open border country with dry scrub, isolated houses, rocky knolls and long sightlines into Jacumba Hot Springs.
