Description

This Austin to New Orleans bike tour crosses East Texas and Louisiana in ten stages. The route starts in Austin, then rides through La Grange, Brenham and Navasota on farmland roads, small county roads and practical supply towns. Farther east, the landscape becomes more wooded: Coldspring, Sam Houston National Forest, Big Thicket and Silsbee mark the transition into the Piney Woods. After DeRidder, Louisiana begins with flat roads, Cajun Prairie, bayous, the Atchafalaya River and long sections on US 190. The final days cross the Mississippi near Baton Rouge, continue through Gonzales and the River Parishes, and finish in New Orleans. A route for cyclists looking for long distance, humid lowlands, small Southern towns, Cajun culture and a clear point-to-point ride. Towns are close enough to make the stages manageable, but not so close that water and foo...
