Travel from Mannheim to Freiburg is easiest by train — direct connections take around two hours and most regional and long-distance trains carry bikes (reserve a bike space in advance). Freiburg is a relaxed start point: the station is right in the centre, so you can build your bike and ride straight onto quiet roads toward the Black Forest foothills. Arrive a day early so you start fresh.
