From Coldspring, the route heads southeast through woodland and small settlements. Until Shepherd, it stays within the wider Sam Houston National Forest area: pines, broad road shoulders, scattered houses, churches, driveways and wet low ground beside the road. After that, the stage becomes longer and more remote. Rural roads lead toward Romayor, Rye, Votaw and on into Hardin County. Elevation is not the main issue here; distance, heat, traffic on the connecting roads and the next reliable stop matter more. Farther east, the landscape becomes more densely wooded. Before Kountze, the route enters the Big Thicket area, with flat ground, creeks and pine forest. The final kilometres lead into Silsbee, a practical stage finish with services on the edge of the Piney Woods.
