After Klokotnitsa, Haskovo comes early: useful for coffee, water and one last proper town stop. Then the route leaves the plain and enters the lower Eastern Rhodopes. Past Stambolovo, the road gets rolling, the villages thin out and the slopes turn drier. The best section sits around the Arda valley near Madzharovo: cliffs, river bends, little traffic — and, with luck, vultures above the ridges. The area is known for griffon, Egyptian and black vultures. From there, the line works towards Lyubimets and Mezek. The Thracian beehive tomb and medieval fortress are close enough for a worthwhile detour, not just a name on the map. After the border, Bulgaria becomes northern Greece. Ptelea is a quiet finish on the Evros, just beyond Ormenio.
