Duncan starts with a short roll-out from the Gila River Valley. The route then follows US 70 east, crosses into New Mexico soon after town and holds one simple line for many kilometres: open steppe, low hills, occasional washes and hardly any settlements. The climb is never steep, but it is almost constant – from roughly 1,100 metres in Duncan to just over 1,300 metres before Lordsburg. After the junction toward Virden, the road feels emptier. The Peloncillo Mountains sit to the south and west, while the Pyramid Mountains come closer on the approach to town. The final kilometres do not lead into a polished centre, but into a practical road junction of US 70, railway and I-10. Lordsburg is a stage finish, a supply point and the first real base in New Mexico.
