Day 1 starts on the edge of Freiburg and quickly opens into the Rhine plain. After a few kilometres the city drops away; beyond Bad Krozingen, fields, orchards and the wine villages of the Markgräflerland take over. Heitersheim, Müllheim, Auggen and Schliengen line up neatly to the south, with Black Forest slopes on one side and the wide valley towards the Rhine and Vosges on the other. A short, proper climb comes before Bad Bellingen, topping out at about 380 metres. Then the route loosens up again, rolling via Weil am Rhein into Basel.
