The final stage is long and almost flat. From Gonzales, the route heads southeast into the River Parishes corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. At first, the road passes suburbs, fields and wide roads; after that, the Mississippi corridor becomes more present: levees, sugarcane fields, industrial sites, rail lines and towns such as Gramercy, Lutcher, Reserve and LaPlace. Around the Bonnet Carré Spillway, it is clear how strongly this landscape is shaped by the river and flood control. After LaPlace, traffic and buildings increase. Kenner and Metairie pull the route into the New Orleans metro area. The final kilometres use city streets, junctions and traffic-light sections toward the French Quarter.
