The opening stage starts right by the Île de la Cité: Paris behind you, the Seine setting the first direction. Past Bercy and the south-eastern suburbs, the city edge feels rougher, then gradually quieter. The route follows the river corridor towards Corbeil and Melun, passing canals, bridges, allotments and long green breaks. Near Dammarie-les-Lys, the ride turns almost rural. Between the Seine, the edge of the forest country and the ruins of Abbaye du Lys, the day ends with the right contrast: out of the capital, into the journey.
