Thick morning mist often clings to the deep gorges of Takachiho as the route strikes east. Following the downward gradient of the Gokase River valley, the asphalt passes underneath towering concrete arches and cuts through dense cedar forests. The easy descent changes into a series of short, punchy climbs as the track turns north away from Nobeoka, entering the rugged borderlands between Miyazaki and Oita Prefectures. Remote mountain roads give way to a dramatic jagged coastline along the Bungo Channel. The route snakes through quiet fishing villages nestled inside deep, sheltered bays where kelp dries on the concrete walls. A final flat sprint along the estuary brings the day to a close in Saiki, a working port city defined by its shipbuilding docks and deep maritime heritage.
