Leaving the coastal plains behind, the route heads directly into the volcanic heart of Kyushu, tackling a massive ascent toward the outer rim of the Aso Caldera. Winding asphalt snakes through highland pastures where cattle graze against a backdrop of smoking volcanic peaks. The climb peaks near the high ridges, offering dramatic views across one of the world's largest volcanic depressions. After traversing the rugged crater terrain, the route plunges down into the pristine forests of Miyazaki Prefecture. The day wraps up in Takachiho, an ancient town steeped in Shinto mythology. The tracks settle close to the famous Takachiho Gorge, where sheer, towering basalt columns flank the emerald waters of the Gokase River, bringing a demanding mountain stage to a spectacular close.
