The journey south from Nagasaki begins with a crisp coastal roll toward the small port of Mogi. Here, a ferry cuts across the open water to the remote Amakusa Islands, landing at Tomioka. The landscape shifts instantly into a quiet maze of rugged shorelines and sleepy fishing ports. The asphalt hugs the coast before tackling a series of undulating ridges that connect the islands. The architectural highlight of the day is the crossing of the Amakusa Five Bridges, a scenic sequence of spans leaping across turquoise channels toward the Uto Peninsula. From there, a long, flat run leads inland across the Kumamoto plains. The ride ends in the shadow of the massive, dark stone ramparts of Kumamoto Castle, completing a diverse transition from open sea to historic interior.
