Beyond Termignon, the route stays in Haute Maurienne at first, passing Lanslebourg, Bessans and Bonneval-sur-Arc on the way to Col de l’Iseran. Bonneval-sur-Arc gives the southern climb its strongest village scene: stone houses, narrow lanes and, above them, a road that rises into open high-mountain terrain. At the Iseran, the route reaches the highest road pass in the Alps, then descends to Val-d’Isère and follows the Lac du Chevril towards the Tarentaise valley. After Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the second major climb begins: Cormet de Roselend. The road passes through the Vallon des Chapieux into the Beaufortain. On the western side, Lac de Roselend, its dam and wide Alpine pastures shape the final approach before the descent into Beaufort.
