Description

This four-day Alpine route runs from Interlaken to Lugano, crossing from Lake Brienz over the Grimsel, Furka and Gotthard into Ticino. The first stage follows the southern shore of Lake Brienz past Iseltwald, Giessbach and Brienz before entering the Haslital. The Grimsel Pass comes next, with the Aare, dam walls, granite and Totesee. Day three links the Furka and Gotthard, passing Gletsch, the Rhône Glacier area, Andermatt, Hospental and the cobbled Tremola descent to Airolo. The final stage follows the Leventina to Bellinzona, then crosses Monte Ceneri towards Lugano. A compact, demanding Swiss Alps cycling tour for riders who want high passes, clear stages and real landscape changes: lake shore, mountain valley, pass roads and the southern side of the Alps. Route

The tour is short enough for a long weekend, but it is not an easy ride. The two middle days decide the character of the route: first a climb above 2,100 metres, then two major passes on the same day. The distances can be misleading. Planning only by kilometres would underestimate the ride. The route crosses very different Swiss transport landscapes. It starts with lakeside riding and busy visitor towns, then moves into narrow valleys with power stations, retaining walls, tunnels and pass roads....
