The Aosta stage has a clear direction: out of the Alps, but with plenty still on the roadside. The route follows the Dora Baltea valley past vineyards, Fénis, Châtillon and Issogne. At Bard, the fortress rises almost directly above the road; soon after, Pont-Saint-Martin and its Roman bridge mark the move into Piedmont. Beyond Ivrea, the mountains step back, the roads widen and the villages flatten out. Through the Canavese, the line rolls steadily towards Turin, with the Alps slowly shrinking behind you.
