Mannheim's palace and Ludwigshafen's industrial skyline frame the departure. The route crosses the Konrad-Adenauer Bridge to the Rhine's western bank, passes the BASF complex and reaches the flat countryside around Petersau. In Worms, it runs close to the Romanesque Cathedral of St Peter. Beyond Herrnsheim and Osthofen, the road begins to rise into Rheinhessen's wine country. Rows of vines follow the slopes, with views across fields and village rooftops between the climbs. Dittelsheim-Heßloch and Gau-Odernheim lead on to Biebelnheim, and the final approach to Wörrstadt asks a little more of the legs. Over roughly 61 kilometres, the industrial river plain gives way to rolling farmland, vineyards and villages built around wine.
