Eight days of cycling from Freiburg to Paderborn: this roughly 610-kilometre cycling tour through Germany connects the Upper Rhine plain with the wooded hills of the Westerwald and Sauerland. Flat opening stages pass between the Kaiserstuhl and Black Forest before reaching the cathedrals of Speyer and Worms and Rheinhessen’s vineyards. In the Middle Rhine Gorge, castles stand above the water, while Pfalzgrafenstein occupies an island in the river itself. Beyond Koblenz, longer climbs lead into the Westerwald’s forests and upland meadows. Freudenberg’s timber-framed houses and former railway lines mark the approach to the Sauerland, where the 689-metre Fledermaustunnel cuts through the hillside.
