The route leaves Riga through Mežaparks and Vecāķi, heading towards the coast through pine woods and dunes. At Carnikava it crosses the Gauja before continuing towards Saulkrasti. Beside the White Dune, the view opens across the mouth of the Inčupe to a broad sandy beach on the Gulf of Riga. The route stays near the coast as far as Zvejniekciems, then turns inland. Fields, patches of woodland and small settlements fill the long arc west of Limbaži and onwards through Pāle. Only towards the end does the sea return. Salacgrīva stands at the mouth of the Salaca, where the river meets the gulf between the harbour areas. These roughly 134 kilometres combine a substantial inland stretch with the pine woods, river mouths and sand of the Latvian coast.
