Multi-day cycling tours

Cycling journeys along rivers

A river connects places that sit far apart on a map. By bicycle, they become stretches of towpath, bridges and overnight stops along the valley. These tours include substantial river sections. Where the route leaves the water, the surface and elevation profile deserve a closer look.

Read each stage, even beside a river

Riverside riding is not necessarily flat or entirely on cycle paths. Bank changes, works and inland sections can alter the course. Check current route notices and the described surfaces. Travel connections at either end also matter more to the itinerary than the direction in which the river flows.

Planning questions

Does riding downstream mean riding downhill?

Not all the way. Routes can leave the bank, cross hillsides or switch sides of a valley. The daily profile shows the climbs involved.

Do these tours stay on signed river cycle routes?

Not necessarily. A journey may combine established river routes with other roads and tracks. Check the mapped course and stage descriptions.
