The route leaves Cavtat over the hills south of Dubrovnik and climbs towards the Montenegrin border. Beyond it, the coast opens again: Herceg Novi, palms, fortress walls and the entrance to the Bay of Kotor form the first major highlight. Small waterfront towns, ferry piers and steep mountainsides line the road along the bay. After the short ferry crossing at Kamenari/Lepetane, the route continues via Tivat and the Vrmac peninsula towards Budva, with the Adriatic, sheltered bays and limestone peaks staying close until the finish.
