From Livonia, the route first follows US 190 east. The opening kilometres stay flat and open: roadside buildings, fields, ditches, driveways and long sections through the low ground west of the Mississippi. Before Port Allen, traffic increases, then comes the key technical point of the day: crossing the Mississippi on the Huey P. Long Bridge. This is not a place to drift; the bridge approach, traffic and road space need attention. On the east side, the Baton Rouge area begins with wider roads, businesses, neighbourhoods and many junctions. Southeast of the city, the route returns to lower, wetter ground. The final kilometres run through Ascension Parish into Gonzales, with shops, motels and restaurants making it a clear service stop.
