The tour starts at the ferry port of Ancona, follows the flat coastline at first, then crosses Emilia-Romagna via Bologna, Modena, Parma and Piacenza. After that, the riding becomes more varied: vineyards, smaller roads, Piedmont, Liguria and the descent to the Mediterranean near Sanremo. The final stage follows the coast through Menton and Monaco before climbing the Col d’Èze and rolling into Nice.
